The harpsichord week of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the only one of its kind in Brazil, was created in 2004 and since then has been held annually and continuously. The event has gathered harpsichord teachers and students from the various Brazilian institutions that contemplate the teaching of the instrument. In 2018 we celebrate the fifteenth year of realization of the meeting, created and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Marcelo Fagerlande.

The main feature of the week is to promote the academic debate on various aspects around the harpsichord, through the latest researches involving the instrument. The main focus is on the research and rescue of its history, mainly in Brazil, and also in the aspects of the didactics of the instrument. Concomitant to the realization of these debates, promoted through roundtables with the participation of teachers from the institutions throughout the country - in the state, municipal or federal spheres -, the Harpsichord week also offers recitals with harpsichord pupils from the participant institutions, such as the School of Music of Brasilia (CEP-EMB), the UNICAMP, the Federal University of Pernambuco, the School of Music of the State of São Paulo (EMESP), the Municipal School of Music (SP), the Conservatory of Tatuí and the School of Music of UFRJ. Students participate in several levels, including professional courses, undergraduate degree, to post-graduate level (Master and Doctor).

Besides the presence of the teachers of the institutions mentioned, the meeting has received over the last years guests from foreign institutions, such as the Karlsruhe College of Music, the Institut de recherche sur le patrimoine musical en France (CNRS) And the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. From these establishments participated Profs. Christine Daxelhofer, Florence Gétreau and Jacques Ogg, respectively. Some national and foreign names that contributed to the development of the harpsichord in Brazil have been honoured in several editions, such as Roberto de Regina, Helena Jank, Huguette Dreyfus and Jacques Ogg.

Keyboard Treatises and methods - in celebration of 10 years of the Week

In 2013, the book "Keayboard Treatises and methods-Works by Sancta Maria (1565), Frescobaldi (1637), F. Couperin (1716/17) and J. Ph. Rameau (1724) was published, among the activities of the 10th Harpsichord Week.

The publication contains the portuguese translations of the works of these authors, focused on the execution of the instrument-considered mandatory references in the theoretical and practical study of the subject-, and which constitute the first printed indications on keyboard technique.

The study of these sources and their translation were carried out in the context of the post-graduation program in music at UFRJ, in an eponymous seminar, by a group composed of 4 masters students-Ana Cecilia Tavares, Mayra Pereira, Maria Aida Barroso and Clara Albuquerque-under the Coordination of Prof. Marcelo Fagerlande. In addition to the contents of the works, an introductory text on the Treatises and their authors was included, contextualizing their importance for the current study of keyboard technique. The works in question primarily cover the harpsichord and the organ-being interesting directly to their interpreters-but their knowledge can also be useful to pianists and other scholars of keyboard instruments.

Annals of the 14th Harpsichord week-in commemoration at 15 years of the week

In 2018 we published the Annals of the XIV Week of the harpsichord, with a varied content. The volume starts with articles on transcription – focusing on José Maurício Nunes Garcia, J. S. Bach, F. Couperin and J. B. de Boismortier. The next theme is the research on musical instruments: an article on the import in Rio de Janeiro, from the colonial period to the end of the first reign and a communication on French harpsichord and Mietke builder. History is also present, with an article about the harpsichord in Recife and the « Armorial » movement and another on the recorder – an instrument so familiar to the harpsichordists – and its pioneers in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the twentieth century. Finally, two works with reflections on the harpsichord and curricular changes of undergraduate’s degree in instrument in Pernambuco Federal University (UFPE) and on the teaching of the instrument in the course of extension at School of Music of Rio de Janeiro Federal Univesity (UFRJ).
